Orlando

When I read Orlando, I was most intrigued by the span across different centuries, and how that affected the meaning of the play. That's when I realised that it didn't. What I took from the play being across centuries was that the topics it addressed (gender and sexual identity) would continue to be discussed for a long, long time.

I wanted to recreate a similar effect with my lighting and set design, and thus I chose prominent elements that didn't change regardless of age; shadows. I chose to use lighting as an element of set design, combining its psychological effects by the use of colours at times, and the lack of colour in shadows so the viewer has the freedom to imagine anything they want onto the shadows.

This will in turn cause every audience member to form a personal connection to the play and the design, and therefore assist in engaging the audience in conversation. That is what I believe Orlando wanted to achieve.
